We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Edward Ahnjung Kim of Olney, Maryland on the 20th of August, 2022 at the age of 81. Edward passed away surrounded by his loving family after a short battle with lung illnesses. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. The funeral service will be open to public at 10 AM on Wednesday, the 24th of August, 2022 at St. Andrew Kim Korean Catholic Church In Olney, Maryland.
Edward was born on the 13th of October, 1940 in Hwanghae Province of Korea, which is now a part of North Korea. He migrated to the south after the division and grew up in Incheon, bordering the capital city Seoul. He graduated from Dong-Sung High School, one of the most prestigious Catholic school, and Seoul National University (SNU) with a physics major, the most prestigious university in South Korea.
Aside from the academic side, his musical interest and skills as a Christian led him to become a member of the choir while studying at SNU at the Cathedral Church of Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception (informally Myeongdong Cathedral), the oldest and largest Catholic Church in South Korea. He also joined ROTC at this time and became one of the second graduates of ROTC Korea.
After graduating from SNU, he served as an assistant conductor at Myeongdong Cathedral and the choirmaster at several parishes afterwards. He also became one of the charter members of Catholic Men’s Choir ULBAU, where he actively participated until he immigrated to the USA in 1989.
His dedication and service to church continued at St. Andrew Kim Korean Catholic Church (informally Washington Korean Catholic Church) and served as the choirmaster for over two decades, Cursillista, parish district manager, age group presidents, gospel singing teacher, church bus driver and many more.
