Carolyn Remmers Havel, born on October 31, 1933, passed away peacefully on
September 17, 2022 at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her beloved
husband, Robert Jerome Havel, her parents August and Blanche Remmers, her sisters
Nancy Remmers Cook and Mary Remmers Miller, and her brother August Raymond
Remmers. She is survived by her brother John Edward Remmers, daughters Sarah
Stacer Petersen, Mary Petersen Collishaw and husband Jim, son Daniel Charles
Petersen, step-daughter Paula Marie Havel, grandchildren Daniel Petersen, Anna
Collishaw, Patrick Collishaw, Matthew Collishaw and James Collishaw, and two great-
grandchildren Marina and Soren Petersen.
Carolyn was born and raised in Louisville, KY where she attended Sacred Heart High
School and became the Kentucky state diving champion. She graduated from
Connecticut College with a degree in English. Her roommate, Jeanne Doremus,
remained her lifelong closest friend. She returned to Louisville after college and met
Daniel Jerome Petersen, whom she married on August 17,1957. They had three
children and lived in various states before he died on December 27, 1968. Carolyn
moved her young family to Arlington, VA and began working in the U.S. Senate where
she met Robert Jerome Havel, a Cleveland Plain Dealer Washington, D.C.
correspondent. They married on November 20, 1971. Carolyn and Robert spent 44
loving years together in their homes in Potomac, MD, Longwood, FL, and Winter Park,
FL. After Robert’s death, Carolyn spent her final years in her daughter Mary’s home in
Bethesda, MD. She was adored by all who knew her, and will be missed enormously.
