Very Reverend George Michael Rados

The Very Reverend Archpriest George M Rados fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, October 15, 2017 while at his home.  He was born in Canton, Ohio on March 9, 1935 and was the second of two sons of Michael and Olive Rados.  He grew up in a household which was very involved with the local Orthodox church which later led to his decision as a young man, to pursue the priesthood.

Shortly after graduating from St. Vladimir’s Seminary in New York, he married Jacqueline Tomey on November 27, 1960. Soon afterward, he was ordained to the Deaconate on January 1, 1961, and then to the priesthood by Archbishop Antony Bashir on February 5, 1961, where he was immediately assigned to the parish of St. George Church in Terre Haute, IN, serving there for over 15 years. Under his leadership, the parish grew and prospered tremendously.  During the summer of 1976, Fr. George was assigned to St. George Church in Washington, DC where he served for 3 years.  In 1979, he helped establish the mission of Ss. Peter and Paul helping them to achieve the status of a church in July of the following year. His years at Ss. Peter and Paul allowed him to fulfill a life-long dream of building a sanctuary and a parish from the ground up.  What he was able to establish with the help of his loving parishioners was a testament to his vision of creating “a piece of heaven on earth”. Fr. George retired from the priesthood at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in June 2016 and remained Pastor Emeritus until his death.

As the representative of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese, Fr. George met with many presidents, Ronald Reagan, William Clinton, George H. Bush & George W. Bush.  He was instrumental in creating and administering Project Loving Care (a child sponsorship program that helped distressed children in Palestine), The Children’s Relief Fund, Food for Hungry People, all within the Department of Charities within the Archdiocese.

His funeral will be held at Ss. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church, 10620 River Road, Potomac Maryland.  His Grace Bishop ALEXANDER will preside.  The schedule of services is as follows:

On Monday, October 23, 2017 The Wake will be held from 1:00pm – 6:00pm and The Funeral Service for a Priest will be held at  7:00pm

And on Tuesday, October 24, 201710:00am The Divine Liturgy followed by the Funeral Service for a Layman. Interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD at 1:30 pm. A Meal of Mercy will be offered at Ss. Peter and Paul Church Hall at 3 pm.
